Comic review of ‘Seven Secrets’ by Tom Taylor and Daniele Di Nicuolo (Issues 1-6)
By Lauren Rogers
“Seven Secrets” by Tom Taylor and Daniele Di Nicuolo is an ongoing comic series about seven secret “words, wonders, weapons, and worse, with the power to change the world.” For fans of “Once and Future” or “Undiscovered Country,” or for those who enjoy a thrilling action-packed work with stunning visuals, this is the comic for you.
“Seven Secrets” takes place in a world where magic and chaos are commonplace. There are seven secrets so powerful that if they were to fall into the wrong hands, they would have the potential to destroy the world. An organization called the Order has been formed to protect the secrets at all costs, but when their stronghold is attacked, and the secrets are in danger, it’s clear a new enemy has emerged with help from the inside. The first issue introduces Eva and Sigurd, two members of the Order that must separate to protect their assigned secret. Their son Casper narrates the story as we accompany him on his exploits with the Order.
Nicuolo’s artwork is stunning to say the least. He creates so much action and emotion in the pages with vibrant colors and exciting panel layouts that excites the reader to want to see what happens next. His style has a heavy Shonen manga influence with works such as “One Piece” and “Cowboy Bebop” serving as his inspiration. The characters are all diverse, each with a very unique design and silhouette that defines who they are. One character, Canto, wears a fabulous harlequin style mask at all times. Seeing how Nicuolo portrays their action and emotion through just body language is remarkable.
The story and the lore of the universe continues to expand with each issue. As Casper grows up and learns more about the world he is a part of, we as the audience are learning right alongside him. Without giving away any spoilers, the amount of twists and turns this story takes is thrilling and is sure to keep readers invested in the outcome. I for one, am looking forward to the development of the world building and character arcs in coming issues. “Seven Secrets” is a gorgeously illustrated, action packed story with an intriguing premise and heartwarming subplots. I highly recommend picking up this work at your local comic shop!
