Everything You Need to Know About Editor’s Day 2022

Editor’s Day is an annual event hosted by the SCAD Sequential Art Department in which professional comics and graphic novel editors conduct portfolio and pitch packet reviews for SCAD students and alumni. The event also includes informative panel discussions and class visits. This year’s Editor’s Day is coming up very soon, so here is everything you need to know if you’d like to participate!

When is Editor’s Day?

Editor’s Day occurs annually in the spring quarter. This year the event takes place May 11-14. Here are some other important dates to take note of:

April 22, 11:59 p.m. ET – Portfolio and Pitch Submissions are due

April 22, 11:59 p.m. ET – Portfolio and Pitch Submissions are due
May 10 – Announcement of Review Appointments
May 11 – Becoming an Editor Panel (Time & Location TBA)
May 12 – State of the Industry Panel (Time & Zoom Link TBA)
May 13 & 14 – Portfolio and Pitch Reviews take place

Who Can Participate in Editor’s Day?

Anyone can attend the Editor’s Day panel discussions on May 11 & 12, but applications for portfolio and pitch reviews are limited to certain students. To apply for a portfolio or pitch review you must be a…

SEQA Major
SEQA Minor
SEQA Graduate Student
SEQA Department Alumni

If you are not a sequential art student or alumni but would still like to receive a review, please contact Dove McHargue, Hunter Clark, or Juan Murillo to see if you could qualify for a portfolio review. Additionally, if you are not a sequential art student, you are still allowed to apply for a portfolio or pitch review with Webtoon. (More details on that later!)

Marquis Draper, Audrey Meeker and Aria Villafranca will be hosting in-person portfolio reviews in Haymans Hall, while the rest will be attending virtually via Zoom.

What are the Portfolio Submission Guidelines?

If you are interested in submitting a portfolio for Editor’s Day, please follow these guidelines:

Your portfolio should be submitted as a single PDF.
File must not exceed 10 MB.
Your file must follow this naming convention: YourName_Company_Portfolio.pdf
You may only submit one portfolio or pitch per company. (But you can submit different portfolios/pitches to different companies.)

Your portfolio should include the following:

Cover page that includes your name, contact information, year in school or alumni status and a short artist statement
- This short artist statement should explain what kind of portfolio you are submitting (general comics portfolio, coloring portfolio, etc.) and what kind of work you are seeking (freelance, full-time, etc.).
Approx. 5-10 pages of artwork
A “Thank You” page

What are the Pitch Packet Submission Guidelines?

If you are interested in submitting a pitch packet for Editor’s Day, please follow these guidelines:

Your pitch should be submitted as a single PDF.
File must not exceed 10 MB.
Your PDF must not exceed 25 pages.
Your file must follow this naming convention: YourName_Company_Pitch.pdf
You may only submit one portfolio or pitch per company. (But you can submit different portfolios/pitches to different companies.)

Your pitch packet should include the following:

Cover page that includes your name, contact information, year in school or alumni status, the title of the project you are pitching and your pitch’s logline
Story basics, including logline, genre, target age demographic, approximate length and comparable titles
A one-paragraph synopsis
A full outline/story breakdown (ideally one page, but definitely shouldn’t exceed 3)
Character descriptions and designs for up to 3 main characters
5-10 completed sample comic pages
A “Thank You” page

Are you planning to submit to Webtoon or Tapas?

If you are planning to submit to Webtoon or Tapas, you may want to format your portfolio or pitch as a vertical scrolling PDF. All of the above submission guidelines apply, but it is also highly recommended that instead of submitting sample comic pages, you should submit a vertical scrolling sample scene approximately 10-30 panels in length.

Additionally, if you are pitching a webcomic to Webtoon, they highly recommend that you go ahead and begin posting your virtual scrolling webcomic to Webtoon Canvas.

What are the Additional Portfolio Reviews that Webtoon is Doing?

In addition to SEQA Editor’s Day, Webtoon is hosting additional portfolio reviews on May 19. Any SCAD student may submit a portfolio or pitch for this event. There is a separate submission link for this event: https://airtable.com/shrIxkm6U56VEz4KE

The submission guidelines for this event are similar to those for Editor’s Day with a few notable exceptions:

You may submit a writing portfolio to Webtoon. Please include at least 1 Webtoon-style script sample in your writing portfolio.
You may submit a portfolio that includes storyboards, concept art, illustrations or animation, not just comic pages.
Portfolio and pitches with vertical scroll comic samples will be prioritized.
