SCAD Scroll Comics Club: Comics Jam

Interviewed and Written by Alesia Boles
I had the pleasure of talking with SEQA’s very own Scroll Comics Club, a club that focuses on student’s love for the scroll comic format, as well as giving lessons on how to make your very own scroll comic! More specifically, I interviewed Kailey, the founding president of the club who works on their own Webtoons, “Adventures of Mr. Butthole” and “Sunny Side Down” (a continuation of a previous year’s Scroll Comic Jam entry) and Arden, the vice president of the club who has a Webtoon coming out soon titled “Best Maties”.
The topic we discussed is this year’s Scroll Comic Jam, which is a yearly event the club holds where students prepare a Webtoon based on a theme the club provides. The Scroll Comics Jam, which is close to ending by the time you read this article, is an opportunity for students to create a 20-80 panel Webtoon. It must follow the theme given by the club and must follow other guidelines given by the club such as sizing.
As Kailey and Arden told me about the start of the event, “Scroll Comics Jam was initially started by Level Ground Comics…Once Kailey founded the SCAD Scroll Club we decided to do a collaboration for the next coming years with Level Ground Comics. Level Ground had been with Webtoon, but once SCAD Scroll Club came into the picture, we collaborated.” They also followed this up by informing me that Level Ground was the one to first get into contact with Webtoon. Most likely through their connections given to them by SEQA’s very own Hunter Clark. He’s also the one that helped Kailey first get into contact with Webtoon and Level Ground.

While talking with Kailey and Arden I wanted to really dive into what the Scroll Comic Jam’s purpose is and how they think it helps students. Kailey told me, “I love being able to teach students, both the new students and ones currently making Webtoons, how to create scroll comics and how to really get their ideas out there. As it can be really difficult, especially if the students want to focus on that, so I love being able to do that. I love seeing them fangirl when they see their favorite Webtoon creators visit and I love them coming up to me to ask questions and to be involved and so passionate.”
Arden continued with “It’s awesome to be able to bridge the gap with the industry and people who are still learning, wanting to develop their skills, and to get it to a professional level. I think that’s what SCAD is all about, growing besides people and your community, because you help each other get better. We want to foster a community and help grow their skills. That’s what the scroll jam is all about.” They also told me that the jam has helped artists get hired at Webtoon, and that it is a great portfolio piece to have. It also just helps individuals train to get a comic done in a short amount of time.
Overall, it is an amazing opportunity for brand new, beginner, and even seasoned Webtoon artists to hone in their skill and create an amazing portfolio piece. This year they even added a new feature where artists participating can leave behind things for Webtoon such as stickers, business cards, or small prints; all after the pizza party!
If you did not get to participate this year, fret not! Join the Scroll Comics Club Discord and follow their Instagram. You can also participate in meetings every Saturday from 12-2 PM in Adler Hall to look out for next year’s event. Please come to support your fellow students on October 24 at 3 PM to join in on the live reading of the comics submitted!
